Nutritious Snacks for Active Dogs on the Go

Nutritious Snacks for Active Dogs on the Go

This article is brought to you by Dr. Angie Krause, a holistic veterinarian specializing in canine wellness.

In Colorado, where outdoor adventures are a way of life, dogs are just as active as their human companions. Whether it’s hitting the slopes in winter or exploring hiking trails in the summer, these dogs are always ready for the next challenge. If your furry friend is your constant adventure buddy, it’s essential to pack snacks that are not only tasty but also healthy. And if your dog is more of a couch potato, like my pug, nutritious snacks can be a great way to show them some love.

Here are some of my top picks for healthy snacks your dog will love:

Fresh Fruits: Bananas, apple slices (with skin), blueberries, strawberries, and melons are excellent choices for a refreshing snack during a hike. These fruits are rich in vitamins and antioxidants that help keep your dog energized and healthy. However, if your dog has diabetes or is on a weight management plan, these treats should be given in moderation or avoided altogether. Also, remember to avoid grapes and raisins, as they can be toxic to dogs.

Fresh Vegetables: Carrots, whether raw or cooked, and homemade kale chips are some of my favorite vegetable snacks for dogs. You can easily make kale chips by baking kale with a little olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. Other safe vegetable options include squash, potatoes, and bell peppers. However, be sure to avoid feeding your dog onions in any form, as they are harmful to dogs.

Peanut Butter-Filled Toys: If you need to keep your dog entertained while giving them a snack, filling a Kong or a similar toy with peanut butter can be a great solution. This not only provides a tasty treat but also helps relieve stress. You can get creative by using fillings like applesauce or pumpkin, and freezing the toy’s contents for a longer-lasting snack. Check out some of my favorite recipes here.

Healthy Treats: If you’re short on time to prepare fresh snacks, stock up on healthy treats that are easy to carry in your car or backpack. One of my go-tos is Super Smarty Hearties, which not only tastes great but also contains omega-3 fatty acids to help reduce inflammation and support joint health.
